We started walk through observations today with the instructional coach and capacity builder. We are looking for speaking and listening standards, with the depth of knowledge levels.With testing all finished, now is the perfect time of year to complete those level three and four projects.
Here is a video with audio that I did today with Elsie in Jen's class. Less than ten minutes. She was working on habit #8, finding her voice. Not too fast and not too quiet. She was awesome after a few practices. She was also working on speaking and listening standards, and writing standards with digital tools. Well, the pig will be arriving in the morning. The email from PTA asking for a harness, for a 25-30 pound pig, was pretty funny. Not exactly something on my bucket list, but I know students are very excited.

Kindergarten open house is tonight. We will start in the library at 4:30, and will end visiting the classrooms until 6:30. We have the CSI coordinator for grandparents as parents and PTA attending. Please help welcome families if you are in the building.
Kindergarten students went to Great Harvest Bread Company. Not only were they learning about bread and healthy eating, but they were also working on common core speaking and listening standards. Here is post from the school website:

Grade level teaming with ESL, Title 1, and Resource will be discussing Speaking and Listening standards with depth of knowledge. Khrista has a handout that we will be using for classroom visits. Testing is almost over, but we still have one month of school. This is a great time for project based learning and depth of knowledge lessons for levels three and four.

Please remember that there is a staff meeting after school.
For the common core writing standards, the first anchor standard is about argument writing. This is a big shift, as students need to be providing written evidence to support their claims. This is a real life skill that is really important in future careers. This is a short article geared towards middle school, but it shows what your students are working towards. In grades k-5, students are writing opinion pieces, narratives, and informative/explanatory texts. Those skills are leading them towards argument writing when they get to middle school.

It is definitely a team effort with morning duty this week, and a big thank you to everybody who offered to help.

One item on the agenda is the fifth grade teachers doing a share and tell. They will be sharing a powerpoint about digital media. Not only will this assist with knowing the academic vocabulary when you are using digital text with students, but it will also provide information to you the teacher so you know what to look for when using digital resources.
The second item will be an update from the Lighthouse Team. They will be sharing a powerpoint Anne made from their recent visit to Carey, and what that school does for the Leader in Me program.
You may have noticed school reader boards around town with capacity and enrollment numbers. We are enrolling new students every week, so the exact number goes up and down a few. Here are the numbers for Harrison. We welcome every student with a smiling face as they enter, and are creative as we find room for them in our classrooms:

I read this blog post about close reading, and it appeared at first glace to be targeted towards older students. However, the five strategies listed would be helpful with even our youngest students. The numbering of paragraphs stood out, as I sometimes see students wondering where in the text their friend is referring to. Even if students aren't able to write in a book, referring to the paragraph or sentence number is a helpful strategy.

The new Spring test in Idaho will be the SBAC. Some states are using PARCC. They just released some sample questions. It may be a different consortium, but it will give you more sample ideas of what the test questions could look like:

Here is an article on 5 alternatives to 'I don't know.' We also don't want to let students off the hook. Going back to check if they now understand is important.
5 Better Ways to Say 'I Don't Know.'
On Wednesday, fifth grade had their students trying the blended learning centers we have been learning about. They not only help prepare students for common core standards and the new assessments, but real life. They needed to learn how to work in a group, take turns, synergy, communicate with speaking and listening skills, and other important skills.
The five centers were the smartboard, video with YouTube, images, audio, and text. Chris and I were really excited to see the centers in action. They are from 1-2 pm if you want to peek in. Here is a collage of a few pictures I took:
