We may have three months of school left, but school activities pick up speed this time of year. The weather also starts to warm up this year. Taking a walk around the building, like during your prep or during recesses, is a great self care activity. We also have a great walking path and exercise cards that you can check out from the office.
We've been very appreciative of the dental cleanings provided on site at our school. We were able to add more grade levels this year. We should be finished this week. We have also had outside dental offices visit with some of our grade levels. We should have the best teeth in the community after all of these very generous donations of time and services.
We have Sharpen the Paw this week. Here is the awesome line up of fun learning activities:
3rd Quarter Sharpen the Paw
Pictures this week include students applying for school wide leadership roles. We have a place for every student to assist. Please encourage students to apply. Not only do students get to develop leadership skills and skills for future careers, but students also get to give service to others.
When it comes to learning at Harrison, every adult has a role. This includes positive check ins, assisting with academic learning, ensuring students are safe and fed, and more. It's a team effort. Synergy of staff at Harrison is something I am really proud of and our kids at Harrison are very lucky to have such loving and caring adults. We have a picture of our school secretary. She has a few regulars that visit with her for a positive check in and academic learning practice.
Pictures this week include learning during STEAM, tutoring after school at Fawnbrook, and a very fun girls activity:

We start the morning with our last monthly Leadership Assembly. The student lighthouse team has done an awesome job leading this year.
We then have our last Sharpen the Paw, in the morning. We need to move/change a few outside activities due to the weather so everything is inside. Please talk with students about this so they know where to go and they could even write the changes right on their individual tickets. We will also announce on the intercom prior to starting. I added room numbers/locations to assist:
Sharpen the Paw
We have a yummy nacho bar for lunch to celebrate Summer staff birthdays. Thank you to fourth grade and preschool for hosting.
In the afternoon, second grade students will be attending their swimming field trip and third grade students will be attending their skating field trip.

The pictures from this last week include our May leaders of the month. We walked to Chipotle for lunch and it was so nice to provide an opportunity for students to find their voice as they ordered and none of the students had been there before. It's all about providing experiences, and the students are such amazing leaders.
We have pictures from both the Spring Concert and the Spring Play. A big thank you to all that staff that have helped prepare with students for several months. So nice to provide drama and performing arts for students just like we provide all the STEM/STEAM opportunities.
A big thank you to Ms. Shea's classroom for leading and hosting the weekly leadership art activity. That has been such a great opportunity for students to lead and find their voice. Students have also learned and practiced empathy and kindness in a very inclusive setting.
Second grade students went swimming for their end of the year field trip, and students who attend Mrs. Kenyon's classroom made homemade ice cream:

We end the week with a yummy taco bar. Please stop by during the lunch hour.
Please help remind students and families about the Spring music concert on Monday at Roper.
The big event today is the Google virtual reality. This is going to be really fun.
This is a great video with two of our awesome teachers, Mrs. Rice and Mrs. Schroeder. We have Sharpen the Paw coming up, and this video helps to explain the importance for this fun learning activity we have at the end of every quarter. One activity this time will be pool noodle people with Mrs. Sorensen. You know the wind storm and rain that arrived Thursday afternoon? Yes, I was chasing the pool noodles in a skirt and with heeled shoes across the Fred Meyer parking lot. Sharpen the Paw is important:

This article is one that we can all relate to in some way. Not everybody can work with the demographics that we have. We get to work at the best school and with the best kids! We have kids acting differently, and quite open with their concerns, as they wonder what they are going to do without school for two weeks. School is warm heat, breakfast and lunch, snacks, welcome and forgiving hugs, friends, positive adults, laughter, and so much more. As the article says, our kids need us. As this week can be hard with challenging behavior, remember the why:

Tuesday is tie Tuesday! Whether it is a scarf or a tie, our kids love to wear them. It creates a different feel in the classroom when students are dressed more professionally, and it's a great real life experience for college and careers. Please help remind students.
We have a great line up for Sharpen the Paw on Thursday! It's the end of the 1st quarter. Not only have students earned the enrichment and learning, but so have staff. This is a great opportunity to provide students experiences that they might not otherwise have, and to remember that balance is best. It's also a great experience that fits with the book Teach Like a Pirate:

We have a great line up for Sharpen the Paw on Friday! Here are the different activities. What a great opportunity for students, and a great way to sharpen the saw as we end the fourth quarter:

Please help remind families about the school picnic lunch on Friday.
This thought is a good reminder to make every day count. Please don't show movies as the year is ending. Students have almost 3 months this summer to sit in front of the tv and play video games. Make every day count:

We have on site Leader in Me coaching today during block times. This is provided with our grant. If you aren't a certified staff member, feel free to join any grade level team if you are interested,
The student lighthouse team members will be eating lunch with the coach as well, so we can learn and plan with his suggestions.
Today is also 'wear a college shirt' day. Try to acknowledge students in the hall and offer a brief encouragement about college. We want students to be having and hearing those conversations.
We have a family note going home this week, and the office will make copies:
Front Page of Family Note
Back Page of Family Note- With Upcoming Dates
Here is the final list of activities for Sharpen the Paw on Thursday afternoon. It's an awesome line up of opportunities!

A big thank you to everybody who helped with our October cookies sale. From helping students count money, taking orders, helping pass out and package, and more. Student leaders also did an awesome job!
A big thank you to Fred Meyer for not only baking the first batch, but also baking a last minute batch so every student went home with a smile on their face. We now know that cookie sales are very popular. A big thank you to Mrs. Simmons for counting all the money and depositing on a Friday afternoon. Just think about all those coins.
Please remind students that Tuesday is Tie Tuesday. We have a few of these days during the school year, and classrooms usually have a very different climate. For those who don't have ties, scarves are great as well.

Thursday afternoon is going to be a really fun day. As we end the first quarter, this is a great opportunity to sharpen the saw and be refreshed for the second quarter. This is also an opportunity to practice social skills, soft skills, and have opportunities that students might not otherwise have. We have several great opportunities for students, with learning integrated throughout. Since our school is the Huskies, we are sharpening the paw. Here is our line up:
Sharpen the Paw 1st Quarter
We have several great pictures to share. I especially love the friendship leaders. They did such a great great job ensuring students had friends to play with during recess, so patient and kind, and a great example to their peers.
