Family Note

What a great opportunity to be in the business of change. We get to assist students with becoming a person that is a leader in their home, a future community leader wherever they choose to live, a leader leading with a business where ever they will be employed, a great person. Here is a great thought for today:

8/20/18

Tuesday August 21st, 2018

A big thank you to everybody for assisting with a great first day of school.

We have the annual robotics kickoff Wednesday evening. Please help remind students about this fun learning activity. With our after school program, every student can participate for no cost. One of the best parts, as children practice and prepare during the school year, is watching kids find their voice.

We have a family note going home this week reminding families about morning drop off of students and after school pick up information. These two times go by very quickly, and we rarely have issues, but we want to ensure that students are safe and that families are aware of the procedures. The office will make copies:

Drop Off and Pick Up Information

Wednesday May 2nd, 2018

We are on the home stretch as we have just a few weeks of school left. This time of year can often be hard for kids, and we are already hearing them talk about concerns. They get fed yummy food at school, heat at school, people who are positive and check in with them, friends to play with, a safe place. With the change to summer break, kids sometimes show their concerns in unloving ways. Thank you for staying positive the last few weeks of school, and for being extra patient with challenging behaviors.

And as we end the school year, the fun begins. Please double check this list of upcoming dates to make sure we haven't missed anything. The office will be making copies to send home with families:

We had two training opportunities for staff this last week. One was a Leader in Me symposium in Las Vegas, and we already have great ideas being implemented in classrooms and around the school. We'll hear more at a March staff meeting. The second training was the Idaho Refugee conference in Boise, and the following videos are from that training. We will also have more information shared at a March staff meeting.

This video from the refugee conference is a great reminder that everybody has a story. Every US citizen, every immigrant, every refugee, every human being. It's important to seek first to understand:

Falafel Story

It's hard to imagine only having one language spoken, only one culture represented, only one interest among friends, or only one perspective at the table. I've been out of the country twice in the last six months. The real world is very diverse, and that is a good thing, a great learning opportunity. Our school and students are an example of that. This video from a session at the refugee conference about building bridges with Muslims, is a great reminder that we are all human beings. We have more in common than we realize, and it's ok to have differences. Differences should be thought of as exciting and a learning opportunity:

Meet a Muslim

This video from the refugee conference is longer, a Ted talk, but has an important message. There is no single story. Imagine people forming opinions about people or countries, from only one book or one media story:

The Danger of a Single Story

Imagine if we asked people what they had to contribute, how they could help solve a problem, or how they have helped others. We are all human beings:

Monday-Thursday is our Pizza Pie Cafe fundraiser. Students were given cards on Friday to take home. If you are interested, please check with the office for a card. A portion of the meal cost goes to Harrison.

Tuesday after school will be the school spelling bee. If you are able to attend and support students, that would be great. If you want to see a success story, the fourth grade winner is a student who is a refugee, Burmese.

This is a great article from Mr. Brulotte. It reminds me of a situation Mrs. Reichel shared on Friday. We moved the special ed buses to the preschool and front of the school because of the water in the back. On Friday, there were students being dropped off in front of the school for Ms. Shea's classroom, and there were crossing guard students welcoming the little ones for the day, spreading kindness and smiles as they made those little ones feel pretty special:

STEM and Special Needs

We take a STEAM approach to learning. As part of the arts, we will be having a school wide play/musical in May. A big thank you to Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Schroeder for leading this, and for those who have jumped in to help lead different areas, like the set and background with Mrs. Kelly. More information and try-out information will be coming this week. Please talk with students and encourage them to participate. We have many areas for students to be involved, in addition to the individual parts, like with the background set and costumes. Here is the play, and a big thank you to Starr Corporation for covering the cost. Friendship and diversity:

We Are Monsters

We had a great learning opportunity with Mrs Buschhorn on Friday. It's a school wide team effort to assist our second language learners. This was during grade level teaming and optional for classified, but you wouldn't know that if you saw the first grade teaming time. A big thank you to our Title 1 and ESL paras for attending:

This article is one that we can all relate to in some way. Not everybody can work with the demographics that we have. We get to work at the best school and with the best kids! We have kids acting differently, and quite open with their concerns, as they wonder what they are going to do without school for two weeks. School is warm heat, breakfast and lunch, snacks, welcome and forgiving hugs, friends, positive adults, laughter, and so much more. As the article says, our kids need us. As this week can be hard with challenging behavior, remember the why:

The assembly on Monday morning will be to recognize our first Family of the Month, and it's an awesome family. We are constantly striving to increase family involvement, and we want to recognize families for all that they give to our students, staff, and school.

Please help remind families about our new family night activity on Thursday, BINGO for Books. Free milk and cookies, student leaders calling the numbers, and free Christmas books for prizes.

We have a staff meeting this week and next week. Both will have staff sharing something from Domains 1 or 4, from the teacher evaluation form. These are two of my favorite staff meetings every year.
