We had several great activities in December, both for students and families. Pictures from the last week of school include preschool learning during their steam class, Christmas parties, December leaders of the month, the annual food drive, sharpen the paw, the family night event with Christmas dinner, and many happy and smiling kids.

A big thank you to everybody for helping to ensure that every student had a great holiday experience:

As we start a new year, this article is a great reminder. We see everyday the importance for preschool and early childhood education that includes kindergarten, that poverty is just a starting place and not a determining factor for the future, how every teacher and staff member matters, that equal is not the same as equitable, the importance of constant learning both for students and staff, and the power of collaboration:

Wednesday December 19th, 2018

We have our classified staff meeting at 9:40, in room 5.

We have two great meals on the agenda. We have Christmas lunch today and Christmas dinner Thursday evening. The lunch has a cost for adults and the dinner is free. The best part is a cozy family atmosphere at both, and everyone is welcome. Our best family involvement activities revolve around food and there is always room for one more at the table. We have had very generous community members and local restaurants contribute food for the dinner. Thank you for helping to encourage and invite families to both of these meals. I got this in the mail this week and I thought it fit really well:

As children sometimes don't show their most loving side during this time of year, this is a great reminder. Sometimes we can step back, breathe, and remember the positive experiences we get to provide and enjoy with kids. Thought for today:

Tuesday December 18th, 2018

Please remember that we have our monthly leadership assembly first thing Tuesday morning. Student lighthouse team members have been practicing and are excited to lead.

The pictures from this past week are now ready. Yes, The Tuesday blog post is early, but we have such great pictures to shares. While this time of year is busy with several holiday activities, there are so many great opportunities to provide positive experiences for kids. Remember the fun learning experiences that you get to share with students.

Pictures from this past week include breakfast with books, the choir singing, back scratchers during steam, students learning video production skills, learning to play the recorder, researching and writing, a family activity in Ms. Shea's classroom, and a Christmas dress up theme that included the Grinch movie.

The big event this past week was the fun activity for students to meet their pen pals. Students were so excited. Let's set the visual for you. The student lighthouse team had signs to greet the high school students, so students could find the classroom to go to. There were big eyes as the first bus arrived, and then we had a total of six buses full of high school students. So many smiles and happy kids. It was such a fun afternoon of learning together.

Habit of the week/Classroom leading morning announcements:

Mussio- Habit 7: Sharpen the saw

Next week: McCollum- Habit 8: Find your voice and inspire others to find theirs

The staff meetings for the next two weeks are two of my favorites. Certified staff will be sharing something from domains 1 and 4 on the teacher evaluation. Here is the line up for this week:
K, 2, 4, Special Ed, Music, and ESL

During the monthly principal lunch with student leaders of the month, a young lady shared that her favorite activity this year was coding during her weekly innovation lab class. She really liked programming with the mouse that moved. The pictures this week with coding fit perfectly with the annual Week of Code event.

You might click on the pictures this week so students can see them in a large size. Pictures include the annual Christmas Concert where every student had a chance to participate, the November student leaders of the month, fun reading and writing activities from second grade that included Thinking Maps, kindergarten students writing and reading during the full day session, and the new walk and talk morning activity that persevered through really chilly weather.

There are also great pictures of student leadership opportunities. We had student lighthouse members giving visitors tours of our school, school store leaders selling candy canes, and both students and staff sharpening the saw with fun ugly sweaters. We have one of our best student participation rates and several creative homemade sweaters that were awesome:

Friday December 7th, 2018

The theme for today is candy canes and ugly sweaters. The school should be oozing a warm and cozy Christmas feel today.

This is a nice article as we end the week. With as many yucky custody situations that we see our kids in, this article is a great reminder about being kind and respectful towards everybody:

Thursday December 6th, 2018

Please help remind students and families about the candy cane sale on Friday. We also have ugly sweaters for the monthly Friday fun. Encourage students to wear red, green, anything that could be Christmas.

This time of year can be hard for students. Add in students who are vocal as they wonder about meals and time away from you. Yes, even the most challenging students love you. Teachers, paras, kitchen staff, every staff member. Students look for you every day. Remember this thought for today as you continue to provide a safe and loving place for kids despite their sometimes challenging behavior. Remember yourself- thought for today:

Wednesday December 5th, 2018

We have a staff lighthouse/building leadership team meeting after school today, in the library. Please let a rep know if you have something you would like added to the agenda.

Please help remind and encourage students to wear their coats and warm weather accessories outside.
