It's a short week, but a week full of fun activities. Thank you to everybody who is assisting with the school carnival! That is an annual tradition that students look forward to every year, and I love that at Harrison it is a free event for every student. If you are looking for a spot to assist, Kindergarten is a great place. We will have all 106 Kindergarten students in the afternoon, and they will be full of excitement as they attend the carnival.

We had several great pictures from this last week, and several great opportunities for students to develop leadership skills.

Friday May 29th, 2015

Fifth grade has their swimming field trip today at Sligars.

Soft skills are sometimes forgotten. Raising student achievement is important, and so are soft skills. They are applicable across all future careers. Here is a short list of important soft skills:

Have a great Friday! It might feel like the first picture below, but just keep remembering the second picture:

Thursday May 28th, 2015

We had a great school picnic, and probably one of our cleanest. Students did an excellent job making sure garbage went in the garbage cans. Very impressive how smooth the lunch line went outside, and how clean the front lawn was.

The extra recess today, for having all library books turned in, will start at 1:30 outside. A big congratulations to Mrs. Moulson's first grade classroom, for being the first room to have all of their books turned in! I went and celebrated with them, with licorice, on Wednesday. We have licorice waiting for the next four classrooms that get all of their books turned in.

We have the 4th quarter leadership assembly today at 2:50 in the gym.

Here are a few pictures from the ground breaking of the new school on Tuesday. These would be great to share with students:

Ground Breaking Pictures

This is a great link to share with families via your classroom email distribution lists. There are Leader in Me ideas for families, and how to integrate with activities and situations at home.

Leader In Me Family Resources

We only have a few days left of school. Hard to believe, but sometimes students have challenging behaviors at the end of the school year because they are going to miss you, or the safety and stability that school offers. Sometimes students show their feelings and thoughts in the most unloving ways, and behaviors. Here is a great thought for the day, stay positive:

5/26/15

Wednesday May 27th, 2015

Please send all library books to the library first thing in the morning.

Third grade will be at their Canyon field trip today, and we have the school picnic today.

This is a great picture of a mentor leader and the kindergarten students she mentors. Learning doesn't just occur inside the four walls of a classroom.

Tuesday lunch was the Principal's lunch and student lighthouse meeting. The students always give great feedback about successes at school, and areas to grow. We had student leaders of the month for both April and May. A big thank you to Chick-fil-A for providing the student lunches.

Tuesday afternoon was the groundbreaking for the new school on our side of town. I put a copy of the handout on the back of the staff room door for everybody to view. We have 6 students in this picture, and some were really intense with their digging. It was a great experience for them.

All students who have their library books turned in will have an opportunity to have a longer afternoon recess on Thursday, and I'll have sidewalk chalk as well. Please come talk to me if there are extenuating circumstances. We have students in foster care, hotels, frequent moves this year, and other situations out of their control.

We have one student from each grade level representing Harrison at the groundbreaking of the new school on Tuesday. Each of these students lives in the area where the new school is being built, and they are awesome.

We had several great pictures this week. There are pictures from the classroom, COW day, and several from the Boise field trip:

Please help remind students and families that there is no school on Monday. I will also send a call out phone and email reminder.

We will have two visitors in the morning from the state department as part of our school improvement plan, and then our regional director from Franklin Covey/Leader in Me will be visiting in the afternoon. He is evn buying pizza for staff during the lunch hour. Please help welcome all of our guests today.

Have a great Memorial Day weekend with your friends and families!

Thursday May 21st, 2015

Grade level teaming meetings are today, and it's our last one for the school year. Our Spring IRI scores look great. We'll be discussing interventions and best practices for next year.

As you send home newsletters this week, and emails to families, please help remind them about our school picnic next week on Wednesday. That is a great family involvement activity, and it involves yummy food. The price for adults is $4.15 each.

Here is a  great thought for the day. Think of your colleagues, the students in your classroom, students in your intervention groups, or even students you see walking down the hall. Everyone has talents and strengths:

Wednesday May 20th, 2015

Fifth grade will be attending the annual COW day event this afternoon, at CSI.

This is a great article. We have been striving to let students know when we are proud of them, even announcing on the intercom, and to also know when we are disappointed. Even with disappointments, everyday is a fresh start to start new. For some students, you might be the only encouraging and positive person. You might be the only person that has said you are proud of them, and that their future is full of potential and promise. What we say matters:

3 Things Students Desire to Hear

We had a great Boise field trip. A big thank you to fourth grade teachers for organizing and spending a long day with students. A big thank you to Marla for making sure every student had a grab and go breakfast, and Subway for providing a free lunch to every student. Here are a few pictures:

Tuesday May 19th, 2015

Fourth grade will be on their Boise field trip today. The line up of activities looks great, including a tour of BSU. That is a great opportunity that matches our goal of emphasizing high school graduation, and then going on to college.

We have a family note going home this week. I also put together a list of resources to help prevent the summer slide, and the summer learning notes are on the school website as well.

All of our students have talents and strengths, and this short article is a great reminder about this:

We have a fruit and yogurt bar in the staff room during morning recess. Testing is all finished! Please come enjoy the yummy treat.

Here is the Leader in Me agenda with our coach on Monday. This is paid through our grant, and any classified staff members can attend any session that works best for their schedule:

We had a great family night with the Robotics Expo on Thursday. It was packed in the lunchroom. It was a very well attended event.

We had one of our school board members as a judge for the younger students competing in the gym. It was a great opportunity to use their voice as they practiced speaking and listening skills:

One of the highlights was watching these two young men receive first place. They used synergy as they problem solved and tried different strategies. They were so excited to win a trophy:

Thursday is the last day of ISAT/SBAC testing! Fifth grade will be completing the math performance task today. Thank you for helping to keep the hallways quiet.

Robotics expo is tonight from 5:30-7:00.

Mrs. Simmons will be gone Thursday and Friday, so patience with the office is greatly appreciated. Things just aren't the same when the secretary is gone.

The excitement on Wednesday was the hatching of the eggs. We have a few chicks! Mrs. Vandenbosch had a very popular maternity ward in the library, and we still have some eggs that we are hoping will hatch soon:

Wednesday May 13th, 2015

There is a staff meeting after school in the library.

We have been very blessed from all of the donations from our local Joann store the last couple of years. Items have been used in treasure boxes, beautifying classrooms and the school, and many student projects. This week two groups of students used recent donations for service learning projects. We have students who have applied to be service leaders, and they are currently spending recesses making cards and pretty items for seniors at a care center. We also had students from Mrs. Anderson's classroom tie 22 blankets for foster care children. Sharpening the saw, synergy, and giving back to the community:

Tuesday May 12th, 2015

The Idaho Commission for Libraries has been a great resource to Harrison this year. From our library grant, to take home booklets at family events, to now this STEM opportunity. I was excited to have our application accepted for family STEM workshops, starting in the Fall. If you click on the first year and returning year links, you can see all the materials that students and families will be able to use. This is a great opportunity:

We are almost finished with testing. Today fifth grade students will be completing the first part of their Math test. Thank you for helping to keep the hallways quiet.

5/6/15

Thursday May 7th, 2015

Wednesday was an excellent day for parent involvement. We had several family members that joined Kindergarten students for lunch. We had a packed library for Kindergarten Open House as well. Add in PTA providing lunch, and it was an excellent day. The highlight at the end of the evening was seeing a note from PTA letting night custodians know that lunch from Fiesta Ole had been saved for them as well, for dinner.

Fifth grade students will be finishing their ELA test on Thursday. Their fingers will be tired after all the typing for the writing parts. Please give them lots of encouragement, and please help keep the hallways quiet.

Please add two dates to your calendar, about food! May 15th, the office will be providing treats and a yogurt parfait bar in the staff room during morning recess. Testing will be finished by then, and it's a great opportunity to synergize and sharpen the saw with colleagues before the last few weeks that are full of special activities and field trips. May 22nd, the regional director from Leader in Me/Franklin Covey will be providing pizza for staff during lunch. That was really kind of him to offer.

We have a very large staff, and very big hearts. Continuing with teacher appreciation week:

Today is the Fiesta Ole lunch provided by PTA, for Teacher Appreciation week. Everybody is invited to eat, not just certified staff. Lunch will start about 11:20 in the library. Please give PTA a big thank you when you see them.

Students have been asking all year for goal nets outside. We really can't have anything permanent. Nets don't last over the weekend. I bought 3 sets of portable nets that students can take in and out during the school day, and they were very popular on Tuesday. Here are two pictures from second grade:

Pictures This Week

This week is teacher appreciation week. Every staff member is a teacher. We truly have the best calling in life. Teaching is more than a career. Teaching is a calling in life that creates positive change. We have the awesome opportunity to help students grow everyday.

I was at an IEP on Friday, and the dad talked about his son wanting to go to college. The meeting entirely shifted as we listened to the young man and his dad share what he wanted to do in the future. We have been striving to talk with students about college more this year, we have a partnership with CSI through our 21st Century grant, and we have have been using leadership notebooks and goals more this year. What you do everyday as a teacher matters. You create change.
