This post is a great reminder of the impact that restorative practices can create in classrooms. We have a handful of restorative practices books at our school. We have had training for staff in the past. This is a great practice to develop and utilize with students. Please ask for assistance if you would like help leading this in your classroom, small group that you work with, or other students that you assist:

Please help remind students and families that box tops are due Wednesday. We have student office leaders who are helping to cut them out, so continue sending them to the office if any need cutting.
This is a nice overview of restorative justice practices. As the article reminds, this is often much harder and more meaningful for all that are involved. We've seen great growth and positive changes with students. Empathy, brain development, healing for all involved, and more:

Today is the birthday for Dr. Seuss! Here are 5 thoughts from him:
5 Lessons in Life From Dr. Seuss
Restorative justice practices blend very well with Leader in Me. We have been striving to incorporate the skills, and avoid traditional discipline consequences if possible. Students have to reflect, make a plan, apologize, make a wrong right again, and more. It is harder and more time required at times, but the results are that students are growing and in class learning. Student achievement increases, and we are developing the whole child. There is a short video with the article below:

Education for students isn't always the same, it's equitable. Every student is unique:

Preventing bullying starts with kindness. This is a great article geared for adults, but the article has ideas that would be great for classroom and student discussions. I love these two quotes:
"Bullying is far less likely to take root in school cultures where kindness, empathy, and responsibility for others are the norm, where students care about and feel responsibility to the school community as a whole, and where a critical mass of students model positive behavior for other students. "
"Ask your kids to think about peers who are outside of their immediate circle and challenge them to try to understand, appreciate, and show kindness to those who seem different or might be having a hard time."
Prevent Bullying
We're spreading kindness with our October staff Oscars. Each staff member received a Kind granola bar with their statue. I wish you could have seen the two young men who are office leaders, as they presented the awards. They walked into classrooms and announced, "You've won an Oscar!" Such a priceless and fun moment. Every person working in education needs to hear and experience that more often. Here is the list, and be thinking of people to nominate for November:

Please try to find an opportunity to thank our custodians. It was a busy day Tuesday, and after school, keeping up with all the drips and leaks. They all did a great job.
There are several great restorative justice resources listed on the following link, and a video towards the bottom. This would be great to save and refer to later. We use several of the strategies mentioned. This is a great alternative to traditional discipline that usually involves suspensions and police:

The STEM camp starts this week. The line up of activities with CSI is excellent. There are so many great opportunities for our students.
Here is welcome video for the new school year. Please share this with students on the first or second day of school. We have so many successes and opportunities for students. If we want to close academic gaps, we have to close opportunity gaps first:

It's National School Counseling week! We are so lucky to have a full time counselor. Not only do our students have an excellent advocate and resource, but also all of us.
We start the breakfast in the classroom program on Monday. All Kindergarten and 1st grade students will have the opportunity to eat breakfast right at their desk. We also will have a few available in the K-3 resource classroom. It is really hard for hungry students to learn.
The school spelling bee is on Wednesday. We will start after school in the library. Everybody is welcome to attend. Students can attend, but they need to make sure they have a plan for how they will get home.
Valentine's Day is quickly approaching. Let us know in the office if you have any students who need Valentine's Day cards.
We had a guest teacher in fifth grade on Friday. He was so impressed with two young ladies who asked to go out in the hall with two other students who were having difficulties in the classroom. The two peer mediators used the habits to assist their peers, because they wanted them to make correct choices and not get in trouble. A safe environment with a talking circle created proactive change that worked, and it has been a very powerful tool with students this year. Here is a resource about talking circles:

Our counselor started a Wow notebook. What an awesome idea! Staff can write a compliment to a colleague and let them know how much they are appreciated. The notes received so far have been so thoughtful. We have something similar being planned for the staff room, so stay tuned!
The annual math-a-thon has started!
We have seen significant growth with our full day Kindergarten students. This week students have been learning about adjectives. Yes, Kindergarten students are learning about adjectives with the new reading program. This young lady proudly walked with her sentence strips to the office, so she could share her writing activity with adjectives.
