This is a great article about students in foster care. The ideas mentioned are great for all kids. As we often mention, and the article mentions, it is much more inclusive to use the word 'families' instead of parents due to the wide variety of living situations that our children live in and it better encompasses the multiple people that support a child:

Supporting Students

The pictures from this last week are awesome. We've spent the last few years updating our building, from the playground, to the classrooms with collaborative tables and newer desks, the lunchroom tables, and more. This Spring/Summer we were finally able to update the staff room with new furniture. And now, the innovation lab where students go for their weekly computer class. We have collaborative and flexible tables, new chairs, and even chromebooks. There are pictures of first grade students as they learn how to code.

Then we have the garden. We've had very kind community donations and grants. There are great pictures of kindergarten students learning during their weekly STEAM class.

We received a very kind donation from Goode Motor that will help to create a walking path in our backyard that we have been wanting and dreaming of. There is a picture of the check presentation at our last staff meeting.

Speaking of dreams. We celebrated our Leader in Me Lighthouse status this week and students must have thought their dreams came true. 8 am and candy was flying. You have to blow up the pictures of candy flying. Pictures and reactions are priceless. And the kids were totally fine and calm when they went to class.

Recess fun continues. Baseball and a train across the lawn appear to be the fun choices. The weather has been perfect.

We integrate many extras that we consider essential and just a normal part of our day at Harrison. From the arts, to STEAM, to leadership, soft skills, and more. There are pictures of preschool students with a STEAM lesson that integrates literacy skills.

There are pictures from PE that are awesome. It was a fun lesson to observe. Kids were staying between the two white lines as they worked toward the same end goal of synergy, yet, each group accommodated for individual needs of their peers, all on their own. It was awesome to observe inclusion that was student initiated; which is the heart of everything we do at Harrison. You have to blow those pictures up.

Several of our classrooms have included a mental health check in during the welcome activity or with their morning meeting. There is a picture with an example from fifth grade.

The last pictures are academics, like Thinking Maps and Intervention. Sometimes our kids forget that they are learning. Please share the weekly pictures with students:

This article is perfect for the beginning of the school year. It matches what we have had in classrooms this week, from morning meetings to building rapport with students who have challenging behaviors. While the focus is middle school, the ideas fit perfectly for elementary school:

Preschool starts today and it is a full house. We have students from six of the elementary schools this year. The ladies do an amazing job preparing students for kindergarten.

We have our classified staff meeting for Title 1, Resource, and ESL at 10:10 and we will be in room 17.

Please send students to room 5 first thing in the morning if they need school supplies. I bought more composition notebooks and a few other items we were short. Everybody should be set after today.

This is a great resource to save and refer to later. Scroll down:

Habit of the week/Classroom leading morning announcements:

   Lancaster- Habit 1: Be proactive

Next week: Johns- Habit 2: Begin with the end in mind

One of my favorite activities the first week of school is reading in classrooms. Books are about the first day of school, global/cultural diversity, and inclusion. I also get to meet every student. Here is the master list:

Book Reading

As you know, the front office is not ready. We will also have students arriving on the bus who have never been to open house or Harrison. The office continues to be in the Title 1 room and a big thank you to Mrs. Dutcher and the Title 1 paras for being so patient and accommodating. Please send all lost or tearful children to the lunchroom. That will be our spot with class lists and very eager and loving staff ready to assist and help children find their classroom.

We do not have the intercom ready. Please discuss the weekly habit and we hope to have the morning announcements starting middle of the week.

We would have packed the office differently if we knew we would be starting school without the main office. We want students to pick out supplies just like every kid that goes to the store to buy their school supplies. That's an experience that every kid needs to have. Please email me if students need school supplies. Somebody will come find them to pick out supplies. We also have backpacks. We might need to wait a few days for some items, but every student will have the school supplies that they need by the end of the week. I'm used to living out of a suitcase when I travel for several weeks, but living out of boxes and finding items has been rough.

Please let the office know if you aren't sure how a student gets home.

Please encourage children to be drinking water and looking for shade outside at recess. We have to be the only modern/developed country without sun safety requirements in our school.

We do end the day at 2:00 on Monday. We will be having our first collaboration Monday. Just like staff meetings, classified staff are always welcome to attend if there is a topic that they are interested in.

Here is the agenda for collaboration Monday:

1. Leader in Me- Melissa

2. WIG's- Chelcy and Anna

3. Impact Teaming/Student Evidence- Chelsea and Regina

4. Code of Ethics/Social Media- Melissa

5. Morning Meeting/ Responsive Classroom- Melissa

I love this article. I added this to the new teacher binders that our new certified staff received. This article could relate to all staff, not just certified. You were hired because we saw something in you. We saw greatness and a talent, skill, lovingness towards our kids, willingness to learn and grow, and more. We do have high expectations, we start with low scores, and every classroom has challenging behaviors- but we are going to end the year with growth and we are going to love our kids all the way to Harvard as we persevere through behaviors:

Advice from an Administrator

Let the new school year begin. Enjoy the journey, ask questions, laugh, and remember to spread kindness. Thought to start the week:
