If students don't have a Halloween costume, please send them to the office when it's a good time. We will help create or find something so every student can participate in the parade.

As classrooms are integrating classroom meetings and writing activities that include opportunities for social and emotional learning, we are hearing situations that are just heart breaking. This isn't just one or two students, but almost the whole classroom. School is truly one of the most safe and loving places for our students. Thank you for reaching out to students so they know they have people on their side.

A big part of our story at Harrison is providing learning, closing opportunity gaps, closing the digital divide, and ensuring our students have opportunities to be a kid. Many of our kids are living adult situations, and they need to experience laughter. The pictures this week are great examples of learning, smiling, friendship, spreading kindness, student leaders, and more. We have such a great special education staff. Here are most of them, but we have even more awesome staff at the preschool. They all truly have such big hearts and advocate often for students, and that includes all students in our school:

Remember this thought as you check in with students this week. Sometimes you need to set aside the content and address the emotions. When student needs are met, the learning will take off. Thank you for finding even just a few minutes to talk with a student. Every staff member matters, especially to our students:

Wednesday October 1st, 2014

Habit #8 helps students to understand that their voice matters. This isn't accomplished only orally, but also through writing. This was one of the main themes at Idaho Leads the last two days. Many items mentioned at the training went perfectly with Leader in Me and other activities we are already doing in our building. We'll use some of the ideas with upcoming staff meetings, teaming meetings, and our school improvement plan to help fine tune our direction. Student voice is a powerful tool, and we definitely have seen that with our students.

One of the other topics mentioned was belonging. This is something we are always striving to improve with students, staff, and families. Think also about books and images, and then the diversity we have at Harrison. We need students to see pictures that they can relate to. Even our library has more multicultural books this year. I can't imagine not having the cloud. Anytime, anywhere. I use the cloud all day at work and at home. The staff blog, documents, collaborative sharing of resources, storing important forms and notes, and so much more. Instead of storing on a disk, in a file cabinet, or on a flash drive- it's all in the cloud. I love this article and video. The cloud is what our students are not only using right now, but also what they will be using in high school and college.

Thank you for your diligence with conferences! Almost every classroom had every student attend with a parent or guardian. With waiting for interpreters, re-scheduling, accommodations, and persistence- conferences are in reality often a 3 week period. Our final number was about 98% for parent involvement! Fantastic!

Linda will be gone Tuesday, so we will have Julie in the office. I will be in Hailey for Project Leadership most of the day. Patience with the office is appreciated. 

The Title 1 Spring Family Night is Thursday. The line up of activities looks fantastic! Please help remind students and families about the activity. Here is a post from the school website. Today is Earth Day. If you are not aware of Kid World Citizen, this is a great resource for global education. You can follow with Facebook, Twitter, and other tools. As we look at global literacy, we are all connected. We don't know the jobs that will be available for students in twenty years, but we do know that we need them to be globally literate. There are several resources that could be used in the classroom, such as non-fiction and informational text, and resources that represent the diversity at our school:
