Here is a great article about communication. We all engage daily with others and with teams. We also problem solve with kids daily when they have struggles with others, often with expressing themselves or a miscommunication. Great thoughts:

From that article, this one was mentioned:

Toxic Behaviors

Have a great Fall Friday and weekend. Thought for today:

We have our literacy coach at our school today.

We have a staff meeting after school, in the library.

This is a nice article with suggestions for how to respond to difficult emails. Thankfully, we always have a staff member happy to process a situation, read a response before hitting send, or to reflect with after a situation- please ask and know that you have others eager to assist:

Tuesday October 29th, 2019

The day starts with the monthly leadership assembly, 8:05 in the gym.

The red ribbon theme for tomorrow, Wednesday, is 'We are absolutely paws-itively drug free.' Students can dress up wearing a school shirt, school sweatshirt, or even school colors. As our school colors are red, white, and blue- yes, even jeans would fit for both staff and kids.

Halloween is almost here. Thought for today:

Monday's red ribbon theme is dress like the 80's and then the red ribbon theme for Tuesday is 'I have the power to be drug free.' For our kids at Harrison, they love super hero dress up days. This should be a fun day to dress up. Also, remember that homemade is the best. We can usually help kids to make something that fits for the day, any super hero of their choice, so everybody can participate.

The staff meeting will start with American Fidelity visiting. The rest of the staff meeting will be our literacy coach leading.

Pictures from this week include our October leaders of the month and the Move a Thon. It was nice to see students encouraging each other:

Wednesday October 23rd, 2019

Please help remind students and families that there is no school tomorrow, Thursday, or Friday.

When we start back at school on Monday, the red ribbon theme for the day is 'drugs are a fashion disaster.' Students can dress up like it is a 1980's school day. This could be fun for a lot of staff, as many were born in that decade or actually went to elementary school at that time.

A big thank you to everybody who assisted with the Move a Thon. It was a fun, positive event.

Today is picture retakes. We also need all of our new students to have their picture taken.

Tomorrow is the first day of Red Ribbon week. The theme for tomorrow is 'wake up drug free.' Students can wear appropriate for school pajamas.

Lunch is provided on Monday, dinner is provided on Wednesday, chocolate will show up throughout the week, and there is no school for all students on Thursday and Friday.

The big event on Monday is the Move a Thon fundraiser. Students can bring a taste of their costume to wear as they run, walk, dance, how ever they move. Feel free to walk or support students anytime. The weather might be chilly in the morning, but there is no rain in the forecast at the moment.

Pictures this week include the dictionaries donated by Twin Falls rotary. Our kids always love them, but they were really excited this year. They were reading them, petting them, taking them to recess, sharing findings with peers, and more. It was neat to watch their appreciation.

We also had a great award presented to Mrs. Marona, our kitchen manager, from the BSR restaurant supply store. We appreciate our kitchen staff and how kind they are towards everybody, as well as the yummy food they cook everyday for our students.

There are great pictures from classroom buddies. This week would be great for classroom partners to practice for student led conferences, to practice going through leadership notebooks, and how to greet.

There are beautiful Autumn pictures from the fourth grade walking field trip to CSI. There are several awesome pictures from the weekly STEAM classes, including with our preschool students:

Thought for today is from Mrs. Rodriguez:

10/16/19

Thursday October 17th, 2019

Please help remind students and families that there is no school tomorrow.

Please send all box tops to the office.

Third grade students will be receiving dictionaries from Rotary at 10:30 this morning. This is very kind.

Fourth grade will be on a walking field trip this afternoon. They will be visiting the CSI campus and collecting rocks. One of our building goals is talking with our students about college and exposing students to different careers. Fourth grade also has Science standards about rocks. We also want our kids to sharpen the saw. So off they go this afternoon to CSI, collecting rocks for Science lessons, and getting some nice exercise.

Almost to Friday. Thought for today:

10/15/19

Wednesday October 16th, 2019

Please help remind students and families that box tops are due tomorrow. Families can continue collecting for the Spring collection until the company completely transitions over to just scanning receipts.

We have a staff lighthouse/building leadership team meeting after school in room 17. Please let a rep know if you would like something added to the agenda.

This is a great article about self care. This article would be great to print and refer to during the school year when life starts to feels overwhelming. Goals, starting our day on a proper positive note, finding a thinking partner to process school items and challenging situations, even eating healthy after you have had to do a room clear, and more. I'm looking forward to a break with my dad next week; which includes swimming with retired ladies at the pool. Remember to schedule time for yourself:

Habit of the week/Classroom leading morning announcements:

Himmelberger- Habit 8: Find your voice and inspire others to find theirs

Next week: Brand- Habit 1: Be proactive

As you might have noticed by the agenda this week, we are teaming. Learning from and with others is how we grow. The first quarter is ending and it's time to celebrate successes, analyze student data and work samples, plan next steps and interventions, and identify areas for growth.

This is a long article, but the theme is super helpful. Many of the ideas and language matches how we approach discipline at our school. It also is nice that the school mentioned has kids like our kids. For our newer staff: we have hard kids. For those that have been at Harrison for a while: we have hard kids and we've come a long way with how we approach challenging behaviors. Every school has students with challenging behaviors, but the approach is essential to turning behaviors around:

Discipline

The pictures this week include a young lady from first grade who loves her mentor. She looks for her friend at lunch and loves the the positive experience.

We've had students assisting with bulletin boards and painting. The picture with Mrs. Kelly enjoying her lunch, sitting back, and coaching is the ultimate goal. That picture is exactly our end goal: students leading at their school.

We have a picture of our readers of the month, second grade math learning and the fire department visit, and the first grade pumpkin patch field trip. That field trip occurred on the best weather day of the week and the student faces are priceless. Look closely at the boys synergizing and showing kindness as they assisted peers with climbing a mountain of hay, happy kids, and even two staff members going down the slide. Great pictures:

Fifth grade will be at CSI this afternoon for the Arts on Tour show. That's always a great activity.

Have a great weekend. Choose adventures. Thought for today:

Thursday October 10th, 2019

I saw this article and thought it fit perfectly with situations we have had at our school this year. While the topic of identity and sexual orientation can be uncomfortable, the topic of inclusion and belonging are not. We want all of our students, staff, and families to feel included and welcome. Even if the ideas mentioned might appear more appropriate with middle school students, the reality is that our older students are absolutely experiencing the situations mentioned. The language and wording might be helpful with knowing how to communicate during situations that arise. As we often say, and as the article states- diversity is our greatest strength at Harrison:

All Kids Feel Valued

We often say these phrases to our students. Whether a child or an adult- Thought for today:

Wednesday October 9th, 2019

Choir starts today, before school. We have kids who have been patiently waiting for this to start, super excited.

We then have our monthly Breakfast with Books in the lunchroom. We will also recognize readers of the month.

Second grade has the first department visiting with them at 9 am.

We end the day with our school nurse and school counselor leading during the staff meeting, after school in the library

This thought for today is so true:

Tuesday October 8th, 2019

First grade will be on field trip this afternoon. They are off to the pumpkin patch.

Please help remind families about our monthly Breakfast with Books this Wednesday morning. That is a great family involvement activity. Even students that don't have a parent/guardian attend- they love listening to other families read them books.

Habit of the week/Classroom leading morning announcements:

Wilkins- Habit 7: Sharpen the saw

Next week: Himmelberger- Habit 8: Find your voice and inspire others to find theirs

The staff meeting this week starts with the nurse. We then will have the counselor discussing mandatory reporting, the alleged abused form, toxic thoughts, self care, and compassion fatigue. Staff meetings are always open to all staff members. This one will be a great resource for everybody.

This week is mental health awareness. This article is a great resource for staff. While we do struggle with getting guest teachers, definitely this past week, you absolutely should use your personal days. They are yours to use. It's a team effort covering the playground, classrooms, the preschool, lunchroom, hallways, office, and checking in with students. That's what I love about our school and staff. No worries. Use your personal days:

Staycation

I tell kids all the time that being at the office does not necessarily mean you are in trouble. We just might need a chat, a consultation, a tune up with a time out. This article confirms, being at the office with the Principal might actually be a good thing. The rule breakers:

Childhood Traits that Impact Future Success

We can all think of people we may not have liked working with. We don't have to invite people over to our house for dinner, but we do have to be kind to people. This is a great article that has tips for us as grown adults, as well as wording for how we address working with others to our kids. What a great opportunity that our kids have, as they get to learn how to communicate and work with diverse people. That's the real world. We all need to play nice together in the sandbox:

The Importance of Getting Along With Others

The pictures this week are great examples of our end goals at Harrison. We don't have a lot of money. We don't have a large fundraising base. However- we get to show and provide examples for our kids of the important things that are free.

There are pictures of awesome STEAM learning lessons that involve just everyday items. Science is everywhere. Learning is everywhere. There are also pictures from second grade as they practiced measurement skills.

There is a a great picture of a young lady spreading kindness, as she is a friend to two young men in her class. We also have a great picture of students cheering each other as they celebrate eating lunch in the classroom due to great behaviors.

We have a new pet in kindergarten from a grant.

We also have a great picture from our morning walk and talk. Students love starting the day on a positive note. Smiling and giving a few minutes of your time to listen to another person is free and usually very much appreciated:
