Additional pictures are on the home page of the school website in that slideshow on the left side. Please share the video with students. We have such great parent involvement. We also had several students attend with an older sibling or another special relative.

Today will be our last pick up of the Friday food bags for the school year. The last bag goes home usually around the end of May. We send home 30 bags every week. We have several students that rely on school for breakfast, lunch, and even the food bags. There will be the summer lunch program, but you might hear a parent ask if there are any other resources during the summer months. Here is a list of food pantries, meal sites, and other resources in our area. It is also on the school website under the parent tab, for community resources.
A big thank you to Kambra, Marla, and the rest of the kitchen staff for ensuring that all students are fed and matched up with resources!

Thank you for your flexibility with the BSU cheer leaders and Buster the mascot visiting. Please email any pictures you took so we can share on our school website. Here are just a few:

We've talked this year about the new speaking and listening standards, particularly with collaborative conversations and discussions. Here are twelve questions, and maybe there is one that could be modeled and practiced with students in both the classroom and intervention groups. Sometimes a sentence starter, as a model, can be the catalyst to an engaging conversation and an opportunity to be engaged with deeper learning.

I was out on bus duty with Amy K. the other day, and I thought of this picture. As we were with students waiting for the bus outside, there was innovation and creativity everywhere on the playground. From using a backpack like one of those ball hop jump ropes, to who can get their backpack in the tree the highest, to pretending the gravel was money, to acting out book characters on the playground equipment. Feel free to email the post to families if you have a distribution list, post on your classroom blogs, or share with your newsletters and notes home.

Today is Earth Day. If you are not aware of Kid World Citizen, this is a great resource for global education. You can follow with Facebook, Twitter, and other tools. As we look at global literacy, we are all connected. We don't know the jobs that will be available for students in twenty years, but we do know that we need them to be globally literate. There are several resources that could be used in the classroom, such as non-fiction and informational text, and resources that represent the diversity at our school:

The Pre/K standards have recently been updated. Thank you to Lindsay for sharing the link. If you've never visited our preschool classrooms, I encourage you to visit them. It really is impressive what the students are learning. They are learning early numeracy and math skills that are preparing them for the common core kindergarten standards, as well as other skills such as social emotional development. Here is a comment from the state department that explains the update:
The State Department of Education and Head Start Collaborative Office have just completed the revisions to the Idaho Early Learning eGuidelines that are Idaho's State Standards for Early Childhood Special Education programs.

Moorseville North Carolina has often been recognized in the last couple years for their academic achievement and technology integration. They even have wi-fi on some school buses, which park around neighborhoods, so students can access the internet at home. Here is a recent video about their changes and successes.

For the common core writing standards, the first anchor standard is about argument writing. This is a big shift, as students need to be providing written evidence to support their claims. This is a real life skill that is really important in future careers. This is a short article geared towards middle school, but it shows what your students are working towards. In grades k-5, students are writing opinion pieces, narratives, and informative/explanatory texts. Those skills are leading them towards argument writing when they get to middle school.

We have been knee deep in assessments, from the IELA to IRI to ISAT Science to the SBAC. Thank you to Ana, MaryAnn, and Lesa for leading those assessments. The SBAC has been going well. I am a scribe for a third grade student who has difficulty typing. As we completed the first questions on Tuesday, he said several times how he knew what to do because Mrs. Long had showed him. Thank you ladies for the great work!

Please remind students about the bookmobile being in front of the school. It is by the church every Thursday after school. That's a great opportunity, as not every school has that.
Please continue to email your conference attendance numbers as you finish, for our parent involvement piece. Several have emailed that they are trying to reschedule with families that missed, which is great. Thank you for being persistent, and accommodating, to ensure every parent/guardian has an opportunity to attend their child's conference.
As we are now in the fourth quarter, I will be at Harrison in the afternoons.

Please welcome Chrystine as she starts teaching in first grade. Thank you to Julie O. for being her mentor this year as she completed her student teaching.
Please remember to avoid the area around the computer lab due to testing. Alternative paths for lining up students outside after recesses, and before and after specials, is greatly appreciated.
Everybody gets the same amount of time in a day. We all have 24 hours in a day. How we use that time is up to each of us. Here is an article about investing in those items that we value and consider most important.

We have a few teachers with classroom blogs. They are posted on the left side of the school website. Some of you have expressed wanting to set one up for your classroom over the summer. Here is an article on some benefits of blogging. Communicating with families by involving them in the educational learning of their child is very powerful.

Encouraging students to solve their own problems is important. Here is an article that discusses this topic. Do our students see difficult tasks as an obstacle, or as an opportunity? Do they know that where they are at now does not determine their future? We have students with heart breaking situations at home after they leave us, but their future is bright and full of opportunity. How about us as a staff? How do we look at challenges?
