We are hosting the Robotics Kick Off on August 25th. This is a community event. We will be having a baked potato bar fundraiser, with student leaders assisting. Money earned will go towards students and their activities this year, like field trips. Here is a flyer with more information, and we will make copies to send home as it gets closer:
First Lego League Robotics Kick Off
Hard to believe that school starts in 10 days. Attitude and being positive is important, and having excitement like a child. Here are two images for the day:

The STEM camp starts this week. The line up of activities with CSI is excellent. There are so many great opportunities for our students.
Here is welcome video for the new school year. Please share this with students on the first or second day of school. We have so many successes and opportunities for students. If we want to close academic gaps, we have to close opportunity gaps first:
Welcome Video
This is a great article about restorative practices, and it relates very well to what we do at Harrison with discipline:

Here are the back to school papers that will be mailed to families this week:

August is quickly approaching, Title 1 Summer School has seen our largest group of students attending, and here are a few articles that are great to read prior to school starting.
Please also continue to send your sharpen the saw pictures for our August staff retreat video.
The newspaper needed pictures for an upcoming article. We had three of our fifth graders have their picture taken:

Here is a great article with ideas and strategies for increasing family involvement. This is a goal this year:
Family Involvement
This is a great blog post that reaffirms the power of the Leader in Me program. It is a shift in thinking, language, and practices. This blog post is about our neighbors to the South:
Leadership
How we talk with students, and about students, conveys a message. This is a great article about how we talk:
Language
This article is a little long, but the final paragraphs at the end are what stand out. The Leader in Me program is a process, hard at times, and amazing to watch as we see lives of students change in a positive direction:
Change
Here is a great article on collaboration and group assignments. We need students to develop the soft skill of synergy and working as a team with other people, especially with peers of diverse backgrounds. Sometimes there are struggles, which are really just learning experiences and opportunities. There might be one item on this list that catches your eye:
Group Work and Student Grouping
I love this article:
Dedication to Learning
Finally, Here is a chart with a few ideas for sentence starters and questions that address reflective listening, disagreeing respectfully, asking clarifying questions, and for expressing ideas. Speaking and listening skills are important for every grade level and every student. It doesn't matter what career a student will have.
Continue to enjoy the rest of your summer break with your friends and family!

Like last year, here is the suggested reading list for the summer.
Just like we expect our students to be learners, so should we as
educators. This is a list with some of the books I've read this year, and at least
one should catch your eye. These are excellent resources for learning. They match our school goals and needs as well:
Summer Book List
Like past years, we can always use help the first day of Title 1 summer school. If you are available Tuesday July 7th, we could use your help from 8:00-9:00 am. We have students from all 7 elementary schools, and students usually need assistance finding their classroom. It's a little bit on the crazy side the first day, but it's a great experience.
The staff blog won't have postings until August, but feel free to join the summer school blog:
Title 1 Summer School
Please remember to save a picture of yourself sharpening the saw during the summer, for a staff video in August.
Have a great summer with your friends and families!

Today is the last day of school! Dismissal is at 1:30, and all staff are encouraged to assist outside.
The retirement party will start at 3:30 in the library.
We have one last paper from Ms. Miller's 4th grade classroom, for June:
June Paper
We had an excellent carnival on Tuesday! Thank you to everybody who helped not only the day of the carnival, but all the prep work ahead of time. We have such an awesome staff. We had happy smiling students, and great synergy from all of our staff members who assisted. We had certified, to classified, before and after school staff, PTA, and several parents. Even amongst all the fun, there were several students reading their new books and discussing their new videos from the give away. Readers and a carnival, awesome! The carnival was a great event to end the school year, and here are several pictures that would be great to share with students:
