There have been several articles in the Oregonian recently about students, eviction, mobility, and the affects on learning and a school/classroom. These are just two articles, and they are very relatable at our school. When you look at poverty, one of the biggest difficulties to overcome is eviction. It can impact any future renting possibilities, and it can absolutely affect a child. Thank you for all that you do to help children and families feel welcome, and with helping to reduce any disruptions to learning:

We do not have the after school program this week. We need the classrooms for conferences, and the after school staff has training. We do have the before school program.
We have notes going home this week about ordering school spirit wear. This will be our only order until the Fall, and we'll be ordering for August back to school open house as well. This is a great time to order for staff. All orders, both students and staff, are due Monday April 9th.
The pictures this last week include Smiles 4 Kids teacher appreciation, and Mrs. Rodriguez was selected. It's always hard to hold surprises, and it was a much deserved surprise.
There are also pictures from our service leaders, kindergarten country reports, messy fun with Ms. Shea, and our awesome Spring Title 1 family night. The pictures would be great to share with students:

Bringing Social Studies to Life with PBL
This is a great reflection from a student about social-emotional learning, leadership, owning behavior, the power and importance of caring and encouraging school staff, and reaching goals as students initiate their own solutions. Though the article is written about a middle school student, it gives great hope as we get the great opportunity to start much younger with students:

A big thank you to Mrs. Dickinson and our service leaders. They took advantage of the beautiful weather after school on Tuesday and picked up lots of garbage on our school campus. Outside looks so clean and welcoming.
The nice weather will be changing to a cooler temperature. Please help remind students to dress warmly for outside recess.
Please help remind students and families about our Spring Title 1 family night on Thursday. The themed baskets for the raffle prizes are looking really nice.
This is a nice resource for images. All of our students complete research projects or some type of presentation starting in kindergarten. This link has a chart for ideas of where to find images:

Thank you to everybody for planning, leading, and assisting with super fun activities on Thursday. My favorite in my group has to be the first grade boy smiling happily as he shared his pastel painted robot, yes a robot, with everybody else making tulips and Easter eggs. We're in the business of happy kids.
School is out at 12:45 today.
This video clip is a great positive as we end the week. There are two well known leaders featured. The first person talks about mindfulness, knowing your purpose at work and having a purpose, and the importance of a positive workplace. Then there is Nadia Lopez, who is always inspiring. She talks about the importance for kids to know and be life long learners, the importance of investing in kids, having hope with our kids even when life just keeps throwing obstacles, the importance for kids to know that they matter and that they belong, and more. Inspiring change and finding meaning:

We have a staff meeting after school in the library.
This is a quick read with ideas for STEM at the preschool level. We have a wide range of performance levels at our school, so this is helpful for ideas for almost everybody. It's the experiences and questions, not necessarily the activity. The post also mentions the word phenomena. We see that word used frequently with the new Science standards:
Eight Ways To Introduce Kids to STEM at an Early Age

We have grade level teaming today for 1st-5th grade.
Please help remind students about wearing a college shirt or sweatshirt tomorrow. We need students to be hearing about college and planning for the future, beginning with the end in mind.
Hard to believe, but we are getting ready for third quarter conferences. Students will be leading their conference with their leadership notebooks, and we get to share positives as well. This blog post is a great reminder that every student is loved by a family. There is always something we can share that is positive, and families need to hear that:

Then there are pictures from third grade and their ELA unit that was all about food and healthy choices. You couldn't miss the cilantro, onions, and tomato smell in the air- the entire school building smelled like salsa.
